(9:45 a..m.) We just visited with Sam III. He seems much improved this morning. With the halo removed, he can move his head from left to right or up and down. It's much easier to communicate than 1 blink for yes or 2 for no. The nurse says that he will get a bath and be cleaned up later this morning. Hopefully they will be able to get him into a chair for a little whilte after lunch. Prognosis is that he will be able to use a powered chair. Fine motor skills in his hands will be very unlikely. He is still on the ventilator, but is being weaned. Sam is receiving great care the doctors, nurses and staff have been wonderful to Sam and all of the family. (8:30 p.m.) Sam made lots of progress today. His nurses put him in a chair for about an hour and a half today. This procedure improves his breathing and keeps fluids from gathering in one place in his lungs. He is breathing deep breaths in and breathing out slowly. This exercise strengthens his overall respiration. His breathing continues to improve daily. Please keep Sam in your prayers today. Keep commenting. We'll begin reading Sam the comments people have sent later today. |

Sam, I was looking through some old pictures last night and found 2 of us when we were 4 or 5 years old. In one, we are in my backyard and you are sportin' some Snoopy sunglasses and a red cowboy hat - lookin' way cool even then. The other is of us at Halloween, you're a clown and you are riding a spring loaded rocking horse thing and I am a witch, riding a tricycle. We were dang cute kids. Anyway, thought that might make you smile; it did me. I'll send you copies of the pictures when you get settled.
I always come back to Dylan's line from Tangled up in Blue - "The only thing I knew how to do was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew"
Glad to hear that surgery went well. You can do this. Love ya, Ame

LeeAnne and George,
I just heard about Sam last night. After the initial shock, i said a little prayer and immediately pictured his smiling face. He has always brought laughter to everyone. Even when he antoganizes his favorite sister-in-law, Lan... (in AU....pulling up the shrubs in the yard...haha). I thought about how fun it was hanging out with him and y'all back at the beginning of summer when I came up there. I've been out of pocket for a while, but I've thought about y'all a lot!!! It sounds like Sam is progressing well. Just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I will try to call you guys later and check on you. If there is anything at all that I can do please let me know. Sam is dearly loved. I know he has the very best taking care of him....and an even more powerful one watching over him. I love y'all very much. Hang in there.
Love,
Kristy
Sam and Family,
Nothing in this world is more important to me than the bonds we have achieved through our friendships over the years.
