(4:30 p.m.) Dr. McDonald reported that the surgery was successful. He removed some bone from Sam's left pelvic and with the use of 2 screws and a plate, he repaired the C5 vertebra. He will continue to remain in ICU as long as he is on a ventilator. He is now being weaned from the ventilator. This process may take a week to 10 days. Please continue praying for Sam's recovery. Hey, Sam. Didn't want to freak anybody out with this info earlier, but it sounds like things are going really well! My oldest boy, Chris, broke his spine in nine places a couple of years ago with the 173d Airborne in Germany while training for the assault in Northern Iraq. It was horrible, and involved surgical procedures that I don't even like to think about, much less write about. The reason I mention this, is because Chris has many metal plates and screws in his spine, and also had the pelvic bone transplant thing. It works! I would have never thought it possible, but it actually does work. It's a great relief to hear that things are going well in Atlanta.
Hey Guys,
What a week you have had!!! Sometimes life just doesn't seem fair. During those times, I think God wants to hear us ask, "Lord, what do you want me to do at this time and what do You want me to learn from this?" Adversity is never easy; and without the inner strength that only God can give us during tough situations, we struggle. Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all every day. I am praying that God will supply you with an inner strength that you have never experienced and that you will feel His presence while you are living hour to hour. You two have always been very special, and I want you to know that I love you both.
